Bulgaria is a country rich in beauty and history. Located in South Eastern Europe, Bulgaria has always been a strategically placed country as it is the crossroads to Europe, Asia and Africa. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria has been at the forefront of change and has initiated some extremely favourable legislation that is seeing the country and its citizens benefitting greatly.
Bulgaria is bordered by Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and the Black Sea. It was home to the Thracians – a race of great peoples who fashioned stunning gold ornaments and who were renowned warriors and statesmen. Their rule was followed by that of the Ancient Greeks who were eventually overtaken by the Ancient Romans. The country still bears the traces left by these larger-than-life cultures that influenced the region so deeply at different times. The country itself is one of extraordinary diversity. The landscape ranges from the snow-capped mountains of the north to the sun-drenched beaches of the south. Its climate is cold and damp in the winter, yet hot and dry in the summers. The history of Bulgaria dates back to prehistoric times as there is evidence that the land was occupied hundreds of thousands of years ago. In more recent history after the Thracian, Greeks and Romans, Bulgaria underwent many centuries of conflicts for power over the region until in 1946 the country was finally declared the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. However, the Republic fell in 1989 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The country subsequently joined NATO in 2004 and became a full member of the European Union in January 2007. The Bulgarian economy contracted right after 1989 but slowly recovered during the 1990’s. Forward thinking initiatives that were implemented by the government along with widespread privatization have helped boost the economy and have encouraged growth. The two most important segments of the Bulgarian economy are those of agriculture and industry. The conditions in the country are also extremely good for high tech and telecommunications businesses to flourish as it has a strategic location and a highly qualified and educated workforce. It also has a growing domestic market. For years Bulgaria was seen as the centre of the Slavic world. In fact, it is the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet. Bulgarian influence was heavily exerted over the Eastern Orthodox Slavs in both culture and literature. Today, Bulgaria is gaining in popularity as a must-see destination in Europe. It is home to several popular ski-resorts and some truly exquisite summer resorts located along the Black Sea. In fact, Bulgaria has been obtaining substantial income from tourist activities over the last several years. Bulgaria is definitely a fantastic place to visit whether you are looking for unparalleled natural beauty, a great ski vacation, a resort getaway or a trip through ancient history. Bulgaria truly has something with which to please everyone. Like what you read? Digg it. Tag it. Share it. Other projects and articles of interest |
