Burgas city guide

Europe property market - Bulgaria
Sitting on the western most part of the Black Sea is the region’s second largest city – the Bulgarian town of Burgas. Surrounded by the Burgas Lakes and the large Burgas Bay, the city is home to the largest and most important port in Bulgaria. Burgas also happens to be one of Bulgaria’s key economic, cultural and tourist centres in the south eastern part of the country.

Burgas’ past goes back a long way. It was believed to have been founded by colonists from Apolonia as a military and observational post. The city then passed into the hands of the ancient Romans. They used the city as a settlement for their soldiers. Back then the city was called Deultum. Throughout the ages, Burgas was essentially used as a military outpost. It was only in the 17th century that a real settlement was established in the area and that settlement grew into the modern city that we know today.

Burgas is home to a number of oil and chemical companies. It also has salt and iron mining – both of which are traded abroad. Additionally the Burgas port adds significantly to the regional economy.

Burgas has a very vibrant student population. It is a university town and it also boasts several high quality primary, secondary and elementary schools; making education in Burgas superior to that found in many other parts of the country. In fact, expatriates will not be hard pressed to find excellent education for their children at any one of the many schools found in the city.

The cost of living in Burgas is comparatively much cheaper than in most other European Union member countries. Food is exceptionally affordable – especially if you shop locally and buy local produce and products. Furthermore discounts are readily available in most major grocery stores.

As Burgas has such a high concentration of students, there is always something with which to keep you busy. There are plenty of cultural events and festivals and, for those who are so inclined, you can enjoy a rich and thriving social life. Burgas additionally boasts a plethora of sporting facilities and venues that are highly affordable.

Like most other cities in Bulgaria, Burgas has been seeing incredible movement in its property market. In fact, over the past 3-4 years, Burgas has consistently been among the top 4 Bulgarian cities in terms of property prices. It is also the most developed of all the coastal property markets in the country. The residential property prices in the centre of the city are understandably much higher than in the outlying regions as there is a virtual lack of large plots on which to build. There is also a shortage of class A and B office space making the purchase of an office virtually impossible. The largest commercial projects currently underway in Burgas are the building of two large malls.

Relocating to Burgas can be a relatively easy affair given the state of growth that the city is experiencing. It is additionally a lively and fun town that is sure to keep you busy all year round.
