Nessebar city guide

Europe property market - Bulgaria
Nessebar is an ancient city located on the Black Sea Coast. It is one of the country’s major tourist attractions and is a highly popular area with several large luxury resorts. Nessebar is a city rich in history as it has been home to several different civilizations through the centuries.

The ancient part of the city is found on a peninsula that still bears the evidence of the many peoples and cultures that once ruled the area. In fact, Nessebar is home to so many historic buildings that UNESCO has declared the city itself a World Heritage Site.

Nessebar began life as a Thracian settlement of fishermen several millennia ago. It then became a Greek colony, during which time it grew into a prosperous and thriving trade centre. After the Greeks, the city came under ancient Roman rule in 71 BC. Much later on Nessebar was undoubtedly one of the most important strongholds of the Byzantine Empire. Nessebar was fought over frequently during the Middle Ages by the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. It eventually fell to the Turks, which marked the start of the city’s decline. Fortunately the city’s architectural heritage remained intact and was further enriched in the 19th century.

Nessebar became part of Bulgaria in 1886 and since the beginning of the 20th century it has been developing as a key Bulgarian seaside resort.

Today Nessebar is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bulgaria. The city reflects the best of both the past and present. There are more ancient sites and monuments to visit than you can possibly cram into a short stay and there are also lovely beaches on which you can relax if all you seek is a bit of sun and surf.

Aside from visiting historic sites and sitting on the beach, Nessebar has a lot of other activities to offer from water sports to vibrant nightclubs and bars to such exotic activities as paragliding.

There has recently been an increase in the number of property investors flooding the city. Foreign nationals, especially those holding British or German passports, have discovered the many charms of this ancient city and have been buying up property all along the coast and in the city.

Thankfully, despite the influx of foreign homeowners, the relative cost of living in Nessebar has remained low as long as you stick to the local stores and products. However, the availability of cheap residential property is decreasing because demand is driving property prices up. There is still room to grow, though and any investment made now in Nessebar will still yield significant returns in the short to long terms.

Whether you are looking to visit or to stay, Nessebar is a fascinating and beautiful city that has everything needed for keeping busy and entertained.
