Sozopol city guide

Europe property market - Bulgaria
The Bulgarian town of Sozopol is an ancient one located approximately 30 km south of Burgas along the Black Sea Coast. The stunningly beautiful resort location is a tourist hotspot with tourism rising by 10% over 2006 figures. Known for its Apolonia Art and Film Festival held annually in early September, the city is already being called the St-Tropez of Bulgaria.

Many celebrities have already discovered the many charms of this idyllic city. Such big name stars as Ralph Fiennes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been seen out and about and others are sure to follow in their wake.

The first settlement known in the city dates back to the Bronze Age. In fact, the town has been an active port since ancient times. It was first colonized by Thrace and later on by the Greeks. Under Greek rule it became a large and populous town. In the ancient past Sozopol’s main economy was based on agriculture and fishing. Much later on it became a prosperous trade and naval center. Sozopol has been occupied in turns by the Byzantines, the Bulgarians and the Ottomans.

Today the city’s popularity has attracted a growing community of expatriates from other European nations – namely the United Kingdom. The city’s natural attributes are among the many draws for most people including Sozopol’s pristine, sandy beaches, its hidden coves and its direct access to the Stradja National Reserve. Furthermore the city offers plenty for a person to see and do from historic sites to bars, restaurants and shops – all brought together by a bustling and highly inviting atmosphere.

There is currently plenty of employment opportunities in Sozopol in the hospitality and tourist sector with many places even offering on-the-job training for those who have never before worked in such a milieu. Added to the abundant job prospects awaiting foreigners in Sozopol the city boasts a low cost of living, although many statistics have pointed to the rising costs of the town in recent months. Still, compared to other European cities, it is very affordable. Gas and electricity bills are among the highest costs you will have to assume in the city.

The price of buying property in Sozopol varies depending on the distance to the sea and the available complex facilities at which you are looking. Naturally the closer you are to the beach the more you will have to pay for high quality accommodations. Although real estate prices in Sozopol are much higher today than they were even last year, the relative worth of the properties available will continue to increase along with the popularity of the town.

Sozopol is a not only a sound place for investing in a second home, but a wonderful place simply to visit. If you are looking for a great place to relax and take in some history without the hassle of the crowds found in other European resort towns, then Sozopol is definitely worth a visit.
