The gorgeous Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been one of the area’s chief attractions for millennia – and not much has changed since the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans coveted the island as their own. Cyprus has been home to dozens of civilizations through the years however the two that remained were the Greeks and the Turks. In fact, today’s Cyprus reflects these two cultures in the island’s division. The south of the island is governed by the Greeks while the North Cyprus is under Turkish control since the island’s partition in 1974. The northern part of the island has yet to be recognized by any global power apart from the Turkish government. Cyprus has managed to thrive despite its division. The island is the third largest in the Mediterranean but it is among the most popular with the tourists – especially the younger crowd looking for a good time in one of the many world-class clubs and resorts that line the nation’s pristine beaches. The island has managed to diversify its economy in recent years. It has become a popular off-shore business haven and possesses a very well-developed infrastructure. The southern part of the island also has very successful tourist and business sectors that seem to follow the variations in the global trends experienced by both these markets. One of the biggest attractions that the island has for Europeans is the fact that they can live and work freely on the south side; this ability has contributed to the large expat populations on the island. Some even call Cyprus mini-Europe as the main towns have been developed to resemble those left back home by the migrants. Cyprus is a growing market and one that has tremendous growth potential given the fact that the North and South sides are slowly moving towards reconciliation. Like what you read? Digg it. Tag it.
