Europe property market - France

The property market in France was one of the first European real estate markets to see significant growth in a very short period of time over the last decade. However, in the last couple of years the French property market has been relatively flat given the high cost of buying real estate and the rising interest rates. Yet, the French property market remains an extremely attractive place for expats looking to relocate.

Although demand was down over the last couple of years, the French market will always have a certain amount of demand. British buyers are especially fond of the French countryside and the pastoral possibilities that are no longer available in the UK.

The reasons for the attraction are multiple: a rich culture, a joie-de-vivre lifestyle, excellent food, a temperate climate and a long history. Furthermore, France has a terrific countryside that is highly inviting to most people looking to get away from the bustle of a big city. People also tend to list France's traditional values among the reasons for wanting to buy a second home or retirement home in the nation.

Buying property in France is similar to purchasing real estate elsewhere in the world. It is imperative to engage the services of a knowledgeable and trusted lawyer so that you can rest assured that your interests will be seen to properly; this is of special concern when buying an older property that needs repairs. However, you can also find resale properties that have already been renovated and updated to modern standards and codes; naturally such homes will cost far more than those that require extensive work, but then you can simply move in and enjoy.

Investing in France's real estate sector is a smart move for any investor looking for long term gain especially now that President Sarkozy has made it a priority to stimulate growth in the property market.
