About North Cyprus

Europe property market - North Cyprus

North Cyprus is the Turkish controlled part of the island of Cyprus. North Cyprus shares the same balmy, beautiful weather and gorgeous scenery as the south side along with an exotic allure for tourists, but that is pretty much where the similarities end.

North Cyprus was created in 1974 during which time the island was divided into the Greek controlled south and the Turkish controlled north. Since that time the North has only been recognized by the Turkish government as being a sovereign nation; the rest of the international community has ostracized it for the undemocratic way in which it came into existence. Since North Cyprus has had to suffer global condemnation some parts of the island have remained virtually unchanged since 1974.

In 2004 the United Nations finally pledged to end the isolation experienced by North Cyprus and the organization has been mediating between the two halves of the island ever since. Although they have yet to reach a consensus that is agreeable to both the Turkish and Greek parts of the island, the restrictions at the border between the two sides have been relaxed making it easier for people to travel between the North and South.

North Cyprus’ economy is dominated by the service sectors including thriving public, trade, tourism and education industries. It has a freemarket economy that relies on the Turkish government to cover most of its administrative costs; furthermore all of its exports and imports have to be routed via Turkey. However, regardless of all the challenges that North Cyprus has had to overcome it has nonetheless managed to have an impressive economy that has produced strong growth rates over the last few years.

In fact, North Cyprus has one of the fastest growing markets in the Mediterranean and also boasts a highly lucrative market for investors.
