An independent kingdom since 1143, Portugal established its continental frontiers in 1297 and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Situated on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula, its geographic location along the Atlantic coast soon determined its vocation to the sea. Traces of this worldwide historic presence may be seen as trademarks of the Portuguese genius. The Portuguese language became one of the most widely spoken in the world, and the Portuguese people were privileged for being exposed to so many different civilizations. The vast monumental, artistic and archaeological heritage does witness not only the 850 years of history of encounters with distant cultures, but also the presence in the territory of more ancient peoples (Celts, Suevians, Visigoths, Romans and Arabs). Portugal has a rich seafaring past, superb beach resorts, wistful towns, and a landscape wreathed in olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields. Littered with Unesco World Heritage sites and graced by one of Europe's most relaxed and attractive capitals, it also remains refreshingly affordable. Savouring life slowly is a Portugese passion, and much of the best is humble - traditional folk festivals; simple, honest food drowning in olive oil; music that pulls at the heart strings, recalling past love and glories; and markets overflowing with fish, fruit and flowers. The natural advantages of a sunny country with such diverse geographic features have turned Portugal into a chosen destination for many holidaymakers, an ideal place for practicing water sports and playing golf, offering modern tourism facilities, and quaint personalized means of accommodation, such as 'turismo de habita' (privately owned homes ranging from wonderful farmhouses to manor houses), 'hoteis de charme' or 'pousadas'. It is not surprising that potential investors have been drawn by these factors. Portugal's vast land and long stretch of beaches is complemented by a rich culture. The country abounds with religious pilgrimages festivals and fairs which bring towns to a standstill. The largest by far is the showcase of riding contests and bullfights. A member-country of the European Union since 1986, Portugal currently enjoys a steady economic growth. For centuries, Portugal has kept the greatest treasure of a renowned reputation for hospitality that makes the country a haven of congeniality and safety. Four decades of dictatorship sidelined the country from modern progress and Europe's power centres, but like its neighbour, Spain, it has spent much of the last 20 years trying to move in from the periphery, forging new ties with the rest of Europe, restructuring its economy, and struggling to maintain what is best in its national culture despite the sudden onslaught of international influences.
