Further up the coast, about 5 km east, is the foundations of Strongylos Castle, a Byzantine watchtower enlarged by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Bogaz is well sited as a base to explore the region, only a few km north of Iskele and about 25 km north of Famagusta, and on the edge of Karpas.

The University town of Famagusta with its Othello tower was immortalised by both Shakespeare’s play of the same name, and Verdi's Opera. A fifteen minute drive will take you to the ancient Roman ruins at Salamis with its magnificent amphitheatre. Another short drive away is the Karpaz region offering its deserted beaches and clear warm waters. Golden Sands beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.
